XP freezes after using restore CD

After using the restore CD I start going thru the different stages as you normally do after using a restore cd but when I get to the screen that asks "what's your computers name" and click on "next'' the screen shows the hour glass for about 15 seconds and freezes. The mouse pointer is the only thing that works I have to manually shutdown the computer by holding the reset button for 5 seconds. Could this have been caused by changing mothrboards. The old one died it was an MSI KM4M-L and I replaced it with an MSI KM4M-V. The first time I booted up after installing the motherboard I got the message that I needed to activate this copy of windows, nothing worked so I used the restore CD's and that message never showed again, however now I have this problem. What should I do?

the restore cd may be keyed for that one motherboard only, and you may need to buy a real xp full version to complete the upgrade.
