Windows XP Home Edition offers "Run As" mode upon right clicking any Icon from Main Screen. If I use a parent tool software to limit access to AIM ( Instant Messenger) it works fine as long as one tries to get in under normal mode. However if you right click and use run as you get in to chat without a problem. Any suggestions how to tweak the system and hide run as for the AIM Ikon ????

Here's a not-very-wonderful temporary workaround you can use until we find a real solution: disable the "Secondary Logon" service [this will completely remove that option for all users - annoying for non-administative users, but it will keep the "run as" completely unavailable].
It's likely there's a better way to restrict the option, I'm sure more suggestions will come along (likely dealing with Users setup). I tend to disable that service on many of my XP machines, because I get the feeling that it just might make things a bit easier for successful attacks. I prefer the simple, slightly annoying, logoff/logon to having that sneaking suspicion echoing around in my slightly paranoid noggin. . . . Gary [P.S. --- if you have other users using AIM, many antivirus scanners will now scan your incoming & outgoing IM messages. If you haven't set that up yet, have a look in your malware-scanning program's documentation. It's usually pretty straightforward] Last edited by GaryRouth; 09-25-2005 at 11:28 PM. |
