Desktop icon won't go away...

Hey, I have this icon on my desktop that won't go away, and i can't delete it because it says "this program is being used by someone or another program" so it cannot be deleted. I tried to do ctrl+alt+delete and shutting down the differant processes, but non of them work. The icon that I'm trying to get rid of is a theme XP thingy, and I think its MSDOS or something because a black window pops ups then closes again... and does nothing... I can't get rid of it can anyone help me?!?!?

i'm running windows xp on a dell xps gen 2 laptop

I had a similar problem. I had to open up the command prompt, then go into the task manager (ctrl+alt+delete) and stop explorer.exe, next I then deleted it from the command prompt, and then restarted explorer.

In the command prompt you would type cd Desktop to change to your desktop folder, then type del filename.ext, where filename.ext is the file you want to delete. Note that this might not work.

I tried like 20 times but it says it cannot find the file... Also, another problem is that the same exact file is on my 1 gb corsair flash memory and it won't go away! Is there any other way?

Have you run your antivirus and spyware / malware programs? What's it's location and program name when you check it's property? Maybe a screen shot would help.

thanks for the quic replies. Yes i right clicked and scanned with both norton anti virus and avg antivirus and it was clean on both tests. I will try the utility now (i tried the safe mode thing too. ) its not that its extremely serious, just that its freakin annoying to see it everytime I look at my desktop

Try Move on Boot and see if that gets rid of those pests.

What exactly is the file you are trying to remove? Just make sure it isn't part of some program you are running. If it says it can't find the file, be sure you are in the correct folder (C:/Documents and Settings//Desktop/, where is your user name, and be sure you type the file name in exactly as it shows on your desktop, including extension.
