Losing Programs

I have lost my Paint program and my windows media player. Also my game folder is gone empty. When I try to activate my media player it tells me that wmplayer.exe is missing. Also directx 9.0c is missing files. I checked for virus's and worms and found nothing. Totally confused.

have you installed any programs recently? Do you have an active firewall? Is there anyone that could be accessing your computer and removing the programs? ( I thought once I lost a game program but my dad had uninstalled it from my other computer).
Also, what programs are you using to check for viruses and spyware?

Spysweeper

Nothing personal on your selection of antivirus software but I have had nothing but problems with it and will not install it on anything I build or sell. I will only use McAfee 9/10 and ZoneAlarm for firewall and of course a good pop up blocker. Webroot Spysweeper is the ONLY spyware detection program that I have found that can search out hidden trojans which love to mess with peoples computers. Spysweeper runs continuously on your computer, not just when you decided to check and also locks out your HOST file so that no corruption can occure. Another advantage is that it constantly monitors your computer and notifies you anytime a program is trying to change or has changed...kinda like the situation you described. I would suggest you install the free 30 day trial and see what it has to say about your system, you might be surprised what has grabbed hold of your HOST files.. you can download the trial at www.download.com or direct from www.webroot.com.

Hi kkjensen

I will try your advice..other people have told me to stay away from Norton. I have been using SpyBot which seems to work pretty well ans also MS Antispyware.

Thanks for your responce.

If you have your windows CD you should be able to put them back on from it. Go to Control Panel > Add Remove Programs. There should be an option somewhere to add/remove windows components.
