Windows Vista

Anyone happen to know when Microsoft plans on releasing their final copy of what was formerly known as Longhorn?

I went to Microsoft's web site, and while I discovered some remarkable information on Vista, it failed to mention a release date.

Thanks in advance

Cao

I think it was sometime in 2007. The date got pushed up after they had to scrap Longhorn and start from scratch again to produce Vista.

Officially it's still later 2006. They didnt have to scrap Longhorn and start from scratch; Vista is just the official name for Codename Longhorn. Same as Codename Whistler became XP. http://www.phm.lu/Documentation/Windows/Codenames.asp

I prefer the names Longhorn and Whistler to Vista and XP

Nope, they actually did do a rebuild. There was a writeup about it in the wall street journal

they did a rebuild, but it has nothing to do with the name change what-so-ever.

Well, yes and no.

The entire project's code-name was Longhorn. Typically, MS releases the official product name when they're about to go beta with the product, and this just happened to roughly coincide with the scrapping of the 54xx builds of Longhorn and the shift over to what we know as Vista.

We're not subscribers to the Wall Street Journal, or at least I'm not.

Aw nuts, the article was freely available when I looked at it. I guess when it's archived, you have to be a subscriber. I'm not a subscriber either :-/
