XP not booting

This pc will not boot up in any mode (normal, safe, last know good, etc.) It boots fine till it gets to the point where the windows xp splash should be, but I just get a blank screen. Tried every mode with same thing. I tried booting from the xp cd and it gets to the point where it says windows is now starting, and stops there. This is a emachine with xp home, 512mb, 40gb, amd 2200+. I have unplugged everything except harddrive and cd with same results. I even put an old harddrive on that has win98 on it, but then it boots to win98 just fine. I also tested the harddrive and memory and they test fine also. Any suggestions???

you said you tested the memory, but test again using Memtest86 for about 24hrs just to be safe

Clear the CMOS.

remove any recently added hardware (even printers etc)

if all else fails; Reinstall

With an emachine and an AMD it could still be heat related. XP takes longer to boot than 98.
I have had a few AMDs that I have cured by cleaning the CPU heat sink and reappling paste to. They would always get to the same paint in the boot process and quit.
/aside from that: I would agree with moistmule, clear the CMOS, reinstall if that fails to fix.

Not sure if it was a heat problem or just bad cpu, but I changed it out with and older duron 1.6 I had laying around and it works fine now (after a repair of xp).
Thanks for the help.

my friend's computer turns on for 5 seconds and it turns off randomly.

sometimes when he screws around with the bios settings, it turns on.

it's a 90% change the computer will turn off, and a 10% chance it stays on.

what do you think is the problem?

since it turns on once in a while, heat really shouldn't be the problem right?

they never opened the computer before. No configurations had been made

I dont know, but I do know that if you start your own thread, you'll get more help. A lot of people have already decided not to read this thread anymore.
