In the Start/Run box, type "msconfig" without the quotes.
In Win95/98/98se the shortcut icon is in Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Information...and from the "Tools" menu, you can select the "System Configuration Tool" (which is msconfig). The menus are slightly different in Windows Me (I don't see that many WinMe boxes, so I can't remember at the moment which menu it's in). Let us know if it won't run from the Start/Run box. . . . Gary [ PS - the executable for the program itself should be in C:\Windows\System ] Last edited by GaryRouth; 09-29-2005 at 01:05 PM. |

2000 does not come with Msconfig built in. You can add it from an XP machine by copying the file or you can download it from several sites. Just google "windows 2000 msconfig".

If msconfig doesn't work from the Start/Run box, one possibility is that the system has suffered a malware infection [the W32/Swen virus is one of several that can cause this symptom].
You can update your local antivirus & antispyware programs, clean out your Temporary files (both local & Internet), Empty the ReCycle Bin, reboot to Safe Mode: and run scans with settings as thorough as possible. When done, if you can connect to the Internet, do a follow-up scan at HouseCall http://housecall/trendmicro.com - this might catch something that your local antimalware might miss. If it happens that you have a severe infection, you may need to temporarily disable System Restore to completely eradicate the infection (so that you don't accidentally bring it back during a restore, should a copy of it be in the restore folder) -- Then rerun the virus scans & they should scan clean. You can re-enable System Restore once the system is malware-free again. Most major antimalware vendors have fairly specific removal instructions for hard-to-eradicate pests, so be sure to check your vendor's website for the best removal tips, too. Pest removal can cause problems, too (especially when vital system files have been infected) - so let us know if you need help setting things right later on. Best of luck . . . Gary [Oh, and I made a typo in my previous reply -- Win95 doesn't come with msconfig] |
