Msconfig
What happens if I disable all start up items in MSCONFIG?
I am asking because after I installed AVG, my boots take a very long time and often sits at the 'loading' windows screen for 30 seconds. I would just disbable AVG, but what if I disable everything, would I get super fast boots, or will it not boot at all? Thanks, Ryan Oh, and if you need, I can make a list of all the start up items and post them.

Some startup items may assist with the proper functioning of keyboards, mice or modems. Here's the site I use as a guide to determine whether a start up program is required/optional/unnecessary or an infection.

Thanks alot PR, I found a few that I know I should remove, but also a few where I was wondering what happens if windows needs these to boot? Will it just not start and go to safe mode where I can enabled them again?
I was also wondering, a few of them were claimed as viruses, howcome neither Norton or AVG, or any of my mulitiple syware removal programs picked up on them? Or could they be falsely identified? I really would question how I would get a virus, no downloading of music, no browsing of 'questionable' material, and the only IM program I use is MSN with about 18 trustful people on it. I will wait for a reply before I disable them and restart. Some of the ones I found I should remove are: TNTSETP NvCpl SOUNDMAN TaskSwitch PDVDServ MsnMsgr |

Should that first one be TINTSETP? Doesn't show up without the "I". With the I it's not needed.
NvCpl is for adjusting your video card on the fly. You can do that using the Control Panel. Not needed. Soundman is the tray icon for your AC'97 sound. Not needed. TaskSwitch is a Power Toy tool. Not needed, your choice. PDVDServi is unnecessary unless you're using a remote for your Power DVD. MsnMsgr is the MSN Messenger. You can remove it from the Start up area by using the Tools>Options in the Messenger and uncheck "start when windows starts". |

Ok, thanks a lot, do you think by disabling them I will get faster boots?
Sorry that is TINTSETP I was also going through msconfig on my other computer and noticed one that was two square boxes, like the characters couldnt be shown, in both the startup item and command... what do you think those are? I couldnt find them on the Sysinfo site. Thanks alot, ryan |
