Can you install an OEM copy of XP onto an HP?
My buddies computer is a mess and he lost his recovery CD for his HP. I told him he just buy a copy of XP and install it fresh onto the computer. Will this work or are HP's setup to only recognize their own OS discs?

Should work fine. Just make sure you don't lose the Product Key label that comes with the OEM cd. And you'll need to download the drivers from HP.

PR is right, I just did one for a friend in the same situation.
Take a good look at the mobo and try and get the model number for it, when you download the chipset, video, lan whatever drivers for the mobo it is possible to get the wrong ones if you do your search using the model number of the computer instead of the mobo, the reason being, upgrades and board changes during the model run of the machine, it happened to me and a quick search using the mobo number sorted it all out.
