Is MS serious?

I went to update.microsfot.com tryin to install updates such as XP SP2 and so on and got this message:

Thank you for your interest in obtaining updates from our site.

To use this site, you must be running Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 or later.

To upgrade to the latest version of the browser, go to the Internet Explorer Downloads website.
Obviously, I was using firefox. So what now? I cant use FF to install updates from thier website?

Is that site Windows Update ? If so, forget about it, there is a better way:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

You can download the full service pack and then save and slipstream it. Can't do that with the Windows Update.

Even after you've installed SP2 there are other Critical updates that will need to be downloaded and installed. You have to use Internet Explorer in order to use Windows Update.

Yes, I know there are other ways. But MS so blatantly disregards other browsers? Thats kinda sad in my opinion. Is this the spirit of business and commerce? I gues so if all you care about is winning $

You could just go ahead and install IE, set firefox as your default browser, and only use the IE for the updates. Or you can order SP2 on a disk from microsoft, install it and set it to automatically download updates. A third alternative would be to use Microsoft Baseline Security Analyser to determine what updates you have and which you need, it has an option to download and install them, but may or may not require IE, It doesn't say one way or the other on the requirements list on the download page.

The way it seems to me is that the IE requirement is probably tied into Microsoft's "Genuine Advantage" validation program to ensure that people are using legit copies of windows.

Microsoft could probably get by without using I.E. for validation for they do have some good programmers. Some people call it trying to be a monopoly but to me it's just competition, so IMO it's just saying to people you have to use our software to update not a third party browser. Then if there is any questions then they say well people who don't want to use Internet Explorer can go to this obscure download link.
