Slow Startup After Login and Slow Shutdown
Hi
I am experiencing slow start-ups after I have logged into Windows XP and slow shutdowns. I had already optimized my Hard Drives with Norton's Speed Disk and cleaned up the hard disks with Disk Cleanup as well as numerous virus scans and Spyware scans ALL Came Clean ( Spybot, Ad-Aware, Microsoft AntiSpyware and Norton AntiVirus) My first thoughts were that it was the registry or the physical memory, so I downloaded some trial tools to defragment the registry and delete the memory. That had no effect. After that I searched in Google and tried a tutorial on Microsoft.com to start up with only the system files, No Effect. I only have four programs running in my start bar, Microsoft AntiSpyware, Spybot, Norton Firewall and Anti virus ( all security). I am currently using about 50% for both C & D drives ( C being the boot I don't install the majority of my programs on it) The only certain way I know of to fix this is a format and that is out of the question so anything that would fix this or make my PC start faster would be appreciated. When is the last time you cleaned out your Windows Prefetch folder. If it has been a while you probably have a lot of unneeded things in there which will slow your startup down.

Go into MSCONFIG and post back here a list of all the things you have checked to "start up" when Windows starts.
Alternatively run "highjackthis" and post the log back here, everything that is starting up with Windows will be listed in the log along with a lot of other information. Read the sticky in the Securities board before running "highjackthis"

Does anyone have any ideas of how I can improve my system start up?

You should go into "MSCONFIG" and switch quite a few of them off, you are also running Symantec software which is a known resource hog. Try downloading and installing AVG7 from grisoft.com, this is a free antivirus program and doesn't hog your system resources like Norton does. I have also seen this "NewDotNet" associated with spyware/malware, try and track this down and get rid of it. In MSCONFIG you can uncheck all of these. O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [CloneCDTray] "D:\Program Files\SlySoft\CloneCD\CloneCDTray.exe" /s O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NeroFilterCheck] C:\WINDOWS\system32\NeroCheck.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [InCD] D:\Program Files\Ahead\InCD\InCD.exe O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SpybotSD TeaTimer] D:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy\TeaTimer.exe O4 - Global Startup: Adobe Gamma Loader.lnk = C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Calibration\Adobe Gamma Loader.exe O4 - Global Startup: Free NaturalReader.lnk = D:\Program Files\NaturalReader\FreeVersion\FreeReader.exe O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9.EXE There is no need to have these starting with Windows, if you want to use them you can click on them. |

OK
I've unchecked those and all that happens now is they don't start up so it starts up a little bit faster but not a hole lot and there's still a wait before I can open a folder or a file. |

Just to throw in my two cents. I had painfully long shutdown times on my computer (in sig) even from the day I assembled it. finally when my norton ran out I uninstalled it and installed Avast home free A/V. I no longer have over 3 minute shutdowns like I did when I had norton, they are under 15 seconds. If you feel comfortable with uninstalling norton and replacing it with something then that might also speed up your shutdown times.

Ah I nearly forgot, sometimes on shutting down an error message comes up saying "NAVAPSVC.EXE could not be shutdown properly" and I believe that is Norton Anti Virus Protection Service!
I also have Norton installed on my dads desktop computer, which seems to start up and shutdown properly and quickly. Also I noticed that after I last formatted my laptop mine was shutting down and starting up at a similar speed. |

Prefetch Myth?
Hi,
Quote:
I am not an expert, so I am happy to be corrected, but this site (amongst many it appears) debunk the prefetch myth: http://mywebpages.comcast.net/SupportCD/XPMyths.html Scroll down to 'Cleaning the Prefetch Folder Tweak' There are dissenting views on this page (referenced from the one above): http://www.edbott.com/weblog/archives/000024.html and this one references someone from the MS Windows team on the subject: http://www.edbott.com/weblog/archives/000743.html Confused! Is there an 'official' PCMech position on this? David. |

I vote for getting rid of Norton. It's a known hog.

Norton doesn't have a particularly good name around here these days because of the strain it puts on your system, you have service pack 2 installed therefore you have a reasonable firewall so I strongly suggest you download AVG7 ( http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1 ) and install it. This is a free antivirus package that doesn't put a strain on your system, after the install, from "add/remove programs" remove everything associated with Symantec or Norton.
