Re-Phrased Q: Software to do one-way backup of a network folder to HDD

Hi All,

This is a re-phrasing of my previous post, opening it to a broader option of using third party software.

I have a situation where there is a network folder containing data records that are needed for reference, but not update, on the road by a laptop user (Win2K Pro).

The easiest way to do that of course is to just copy the folder to the HDD on the laptop whenever they are in the office and have time to do it.

However, the folder is quite large, and contains a lot of small files, so it takes around an hour to copy over (100 Mbps network).

I am wondering if there is some simple software (freeware would be ideal of course) that will selectively copy over only the files that have updated since the last copy was done, thus shortening the length of time it takes.

Can you make any recommendations of what to use for that?

Thanks,

David.

You need to look for a "Sync" type software. MS has a freebie for XP SP2....

SyncToy v1.0 for Windows XP SP2

That is precisely what I needed - superb!

For reference, but not as a recommendation, I have installed it on a Win2k Pro SP4 machine and it seems to be fine. However, please do not do that unless you are sure you can handle a total loss of the machine and any attached network resources! If you aren't sure, don't do it!

Thanks,

David.
