windows xp windows update problem - no sp2
i reinstalled windows xp last night, i have done this before so it is nothing new to me, and it has been activated already too. well, when running windows update, the only express update i'm getting is some "Security Update for Windows XP (KB835732)" i can't get past it! i even did a manual download and install of it and that is all i am getting. i can't even get to service pack 1 or anything to get my motherboard cd to install the usb 2.0 drivers.... it's quite frustrating. any suggestions on how to get past this? i have never had this issue before at all.
windows xp (no service packs... yet) AMD athlon xp 2500+ (1.8ghz) 1gb ram 120gb HDD + 40gb HDD backup Geforce 6200 OC 256mb 3xagp video |

Hi,
I had a problem similar to that. What helped me was going directly to the Windows Update Site. There is an updated version of the software Microsoft uses to scan your system for updates. Install it and restart your computer. Try going to the Windows Update site again and see if it allows you to download updates properly. If not try setting the computer to download updates automatically and see if it allows you to install them that way. I really hope this helps you. If it does not the people here are great. They should have you fixed up in no time. A mobo driver disk without the proper updates is a headache waiting to happon. Good Luck |

even the automatic updates only gives me the same one update - the security one i mentioned before. and this was a fresh install. i formatted the harddrive too - i have never installed over an old copy. the only drivers that are not off of the motherboard cd yet is only for the usb 2.0, which i can't do until i have at least service pack 1 installed, so all my usb stuff is running on the older usb version. all other necessary drivers are installed. i have never had this issue before... will running the "windows xp service pack 2 network installation for IT professionals and develops" work? since that looks like it's a manual download, because windows update just isn't working right, and i have done many reboots ..... and haven't installed any other software yet either. and looking at my update history on the update site, i have installed that one security update 9 times sucessfully!!!! that is crazy

Try running Microsoft Baseline Security Analyser. Download it from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en It will scan your system and list all the updates you have, whether they are working correctly and which ones you need. It has an option to install. If that doesnt work you will have to go to Microsoft and find the manual downloads.

Witch connection are you using?
Is this "Security Update for Windows XP (KB835732)" installed or not, if is installed try to uninstall it (in safe mode) then download( http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en )and install it manualy, and if you can it's better to use SP2 network install!!!

i was getting so irritated with it that i just decided "screw it" and did a new install, instead i used the windows xp pro disk that my friend gave me because they recently switched to mac and now i have had no problems
and have been getting full updates. it was weird, cuz i had just redone my laptop also with my windows xp disk and didn't have the problems with it.. oh well. thanks for the advice though, i'll keep it in mind in case it happens again

no, but you can call in to microsoft and have them activate it for you... thought usually i have a hard time understanding them - it's a completely legal disk too - it came with my gateway laptop
i think if it were that illegal then microsoft needs to be having better people doing their job :-P maybe some english speaking people also....

So you have two legal copies of XP one for the laptop and one for the desktop, the gateway copy might be incompatible with the desktop, use the other disk for the desktop. You have to have a XP disk for each computer or a multiple license disk or you will not only be illegal, but will have problems.

well if it's that much of an issue of using the same disk, micorosft shouldn't be giving me an activation number then :-P *shame on them* i only have the gateway copy, it is only an OS disk, any hardware drivers are on a separate disk. right now i only have that disk, which is XP home on the laptop, which is being sold anyways next week, and XP pro on my computer now. ... i think it is only as illegal as microsoft is letting it be. it's a valid copy, they are the ones that are allowing me to use it. i've never had problems before - it was just something weird that's all.
