Too Many Files In System32 Folder
Hi All:
My PC started slowing down, I ran Defrag, no help. I ran the following RegClean, AGV Scan, SpyBot, SpywareBlaster, BlackLight, Ad-Aware SE, and hijackthis, nothing showed up. I went to Panda and Trend Micro and did a scan, nothing found. My System32 folder has 1.25Gb of files, and it looks like to me that it has a bunch of files that I've never seen before, they start from 1A00.tmp to FFF.tmp, looks like maybe 100,000 files or more, can't even scroll to see them all. Also when I ran the Panda Scan, it wouldn't go past 48UMicro.dll in System32 folder, but then it said it was finished, and that it didn't find any problems. Have I picked up something new that can't be detected yet? Sure would appreciate your help, and thanks ahead of time on this. Bill Lane OS: Win XP Pro

Hi Corky:
That gave me ... C:\My Documents Settings\William Lane/ with a flashing cursor. I couldn't enter anything, couldn't get the C: prompt by it's self. The only thing it would let me do is, type Exit to get out. I now have another problem, I've lost my sound. In Sound and Audio Devices Properties/Audio/Default Device it used to say ... C-Media AC97 Audio Device, but now it says ... Modem#7 Line Playback. And I can't get it to change back. Last edited by Bill Lane; 10-06-2005 at 06:32 PM. |

Hi ktkendall:
Thanks, but I solved my problem, at least for now. I did a clean install of WinXP Pro and went for the NTFS file system. I don't know where all those files came from, and I sure hope they don't come back. I thought it must be a virus also, but again AVG, Panda and Trend Micro on-Line Scan didn't find anything. Thanks to all for your input, Bill Lane |
