XP Won't Install!

I have had Linux installed for a while and now I won't to setup a dual boot. I formatted the HD (uninstalling Linux) I want to use to FAT and put in my XP upgrade disc. I formatted again to NTFS and after it copied all the files and rebooted it says "Error loading operating system." If I boot to the CD, I just go through the same process again, if I boot to the hard drive, it gives me that error. What is going wrong?!

TIA

Did you do a full format of the entire drive? If so there wasn't anything there to upgrade. Reinstall the older version of windows, then use the upgrade disk to upgrade it to XP.

It tells me to insert the old version's disk and then it installs. In the manual it says you can install without an operating system and I have read that too. I will give that a shot though.

Great. I can't even install 98. It detects an error with the HD after I spend an hour formatting it (FAT32). Now when I try to install XP and boot, the error is "Missing operating system." What is going on?! How do I fix this?

Thanks!

Clean out your MBR, the linux boot loader is probably still residing in the mbr, formatting doesn't clean out this file, a later version of FDisk should clean it out, use the cmmand fdisk/mbr.

I'd zero fill the hard drive. Most hard drive manufacturer's diagnostic or installation utilities have a zero fill option, or you could use Darik's Boot & Nuke.

http://dban.sourceforge.net/

It's also on the Ultimate Boot CD. A basic single pass should be fine, no need for DOD-strength zeroing, that takes forever.

So I just download that, put it on a floppy, boot to it, zero fill the HD and I'm done?
