Hi,
I have a D-Link DFM-560ES External Modem thats connected through COM 1 (5/4 PIN port).OS is Windows XP Pro thats been installed recently. Every time i connect to the net it gives Error 797: A connection to the remote computer could not be established because the modem was not found or busy. It has an external power adaptor thats switched on only when going online.I tried booting up the system with the modem adaptor on, and yes, it detects the modem and it works fine.My question is whether the modem needs to be switched on every time while booting the pc.I feel that it should not be. Since Win XP is PnP..I never had this problem with Windows ME. In the Device Manager, there are no driver conflicts for the modem.Once I click the SCAN FOR HARWARE CHANGES button, it detects the modem and there are no probs thereon. I dont think i should be goin' to Dev Mgr every time I need to log on to the net. Is there any way I can have the modem recognized the moment its powered on and not have it detected when the modem is booted along with the PC. Anything that I need to set here, please advise, Thanks for your time

Com ports are not plug & Play, it is generally advisable to turn the modem on prior to starting the computer, but saying that my laser runs from a com port and seems to work fine turned on after the computer most of the time, even though I have to restart a number of times, sometimes for it to work properly. I use an external modem, but its connected to the ups, so it turns on when I turn the ups on prior to starting the computer and if theres a small blackout I don't lose the connection. To do what you want to do, you need a plug & play usb modem.

Sorry I can't help you further, I know of no switches to solve your problem, other than what i've said earlier, maybe somebody else knows how to solve your problem, have you tried the latest drivers for the modem.

Of course, i went straight to the D-Link website and downloaded the latest drivers for the modem. Installed them perfectly with no conflicts. Checked the Dev Mgr. It queried fine too. My last thought is...can this be a cable problem. If i booted the PC with the modem switched ON, fine it detects the modem, else its error 797. I never had this problem with Windows ME. But the modem driver for ME was installed from the bundled software CD, but I'm afraid there are no drivers for Windows XP on that CD. I appreciate all your suggestions, but the issue still persists. Keep me posted if you come across anything new on this one...
One thing that still amazes me is.....Why didn't I have the same problem with Windows ME? Thanks for taking time to read through, Ed. |

Does anyone know how to connect the 9-PIN COM port to a USB Port on the PC. Yes, I am talking about the SERIAL-TO-USB Converter. Can that be of help. Is there a way I can assemble it myself. In that case what components do I require...Please send in your suggestions,
Thanks, Ed. |

Any suggestions..I still have the same issue. Is there any way that I can make the PC recognize the modem once its powered and connected to the PC (Its powered on after the PC has booted)?
I feel that the last option would be to do a full format. But will that solve the problem? |

I don't know if the converter will help but I use a serial to usb cable for my palm so I can hot swap the HotSync cradle from one machine to another. I picked mine up at a local store. Here's an example of one.

I would seriously think about replacing the modem with one that's XP logo certified.

Hi glc,
Thanks for the reply..Even I believe that the modem is the culprit. It has been handled with great care and I have had no problems whatsoever till the time I switched over to Windows XP Pro. I have an APC 500VA and have had no power issues with the entire PC unit over the past 2 years. I agree with your suggestion, but is there any tweak available to rectify the situation (hardware or software). Is there any setting that can be altered inside the modem? The modem is approximately 30 months old. It has costed around USD 64! The D-Link DFM-560ES External Modem connected to serial port (5/4 PIN). I would really appreciate your inputs on what modem I can possibly go for (internal/external), Thanks a lot, Ed. Last edited by edison; 02-21-2006 at 07:23 AM. |

Okay.........if you could provide a link to an online vendor there with a website in English, we can make some recommendations.

Hi Edison, generally I'd go for an external modem for ease of use.

No, please provide a link to a website in India for a seller of computer parts that sells modems. I need to see what kinds of modems are available, they are not the same as in the US or the rest of the world.
Have you tried the official XP driver for that modem? http://www.dlink.co.in/dlink/Drivers...60es/winxp.zip Last edited by glc; 02-27-2006 at 03:54 AM. |

Yes, you are right. I have noticed that modem models differ according to geographic locations. Yes I have already tried installing the driver on d-link india website. I strongly feel that it is not a hardware issue. As I have mentioned earlier, the modem is "D-Link DFM-560ES External Modem". In case you come across any tweak for the issue, please let me know. Thanks once again for your response, Ed. |

Hi Team
Well I am really done with this external modem..Thanks for all your suggestions. Can you suggest some really good internal modems (dial-up) that I can go for? Kindly suggest, Ed. |

Ed, I already asked you for a link to a vendor in India that sells modems so we can see what modems are available there. I can certainly suggest modem models that are sold in the US, but I can almost guarantee you that they won't be sold there.
I am familiar with US, Canada, and UK vendors, but not any other countries. US - newegg.com and others CA - ncix.com and others UK - dabs.com and others Last edited by glc; 03-12-2006 at 09:27 AM. |
