WinXP Installed Different This Time
Hi All:
I wanted to make sure I did a clean install this time, so I formatted C:/s Set the Bios to boot from CDROM, but it wouldn't do it, so I looked for the drive that had the WinXP Pro disk in it and typed SETUP, and it installed. This was an upgrade disk so I had to insert my Win98 disk at one point in the installation. The installation was all blue screens untill the Desktop showed up, it wasn't that way when I installed over Win98, it was a more colorful. But now it don't look like the WinXP that I installed over Win98, it looks more like Win98. I also went for the NTFS file system this time. What can I do to get the WinXP look that I got on the first installation? All help will be very much appreciated, and thanks ahead of time, Bill Lane

I'd start again and delete your partition/s and repartition and allow the XP upgrade disk to format the disk, it appears you still have windows 98 on the disk, the only reason you need the 98 disk is to verify the upgrade, personally I never buy upgrade disks, I prefer to buy or advise people to buy oem disks when I build computers, so I haven't used a upgrade disk in years, How come your computer won't boot from CD properly, I know older computers had difficulty doing this, I would run FDisk from a floppy and delete the partitions on the diskdrive and run fdisk/mbr to clean out the Mbr ( master boot record or file ) and use the XP disk to either re-partition or just format the drive.

Hi PommieB:
Well I was hoping I wouldn't have to do that because I have that drive partitioned into four equal parts. I thought I could just Format C:/s and leave the other three partitions alone. Is it posible to run FDisk/mbr just for the C:/ partition? If not, I'll do the whole drive and repartition again, let me know. And thanks for the input, Bill Lane |

It's possible of course with Windows XP setup CD to format only partition you choose, for MBR windows XP uses Recovery Console where you type HELP for list of commands you can use and FIXMBR is one of them!!!

If you're looking to fix the windows theme, right click the desktop > properties > appearance tab. Then change Windows Classic Style to Windows XP Style

Thanks macko72 and blue60007,
I'm going to reformat the whole drive like PommieB suggestet, and run fdisk/mbr to clean out the Mbr. I backed up all my goodies that were in the other partitions to an external hard drive, so I can put them back. Thanks again, Bill Lane |
