"Serious Error" in XP

So my computer restarts whenever I try to open up my CD-ROM drives. This just started happening recently. When I load back into Windows it just says Windows has recovered from a serious error. I've opened up the computer, made sure all the power connections are secure and the IDE cables but it keeps doing it. I've searched for topics similar to mine and am stuck on this Restart on Error option that I can uncheck. Can someone please tell me where it is?

I've also gone into the Event Viewer for System and can see the errors in here. I go under the Microsoft database to see what it is but it doesn't really say anything. There's also errors before the system crash ones that say ASPI32 service can not start because it could not find the specified file. I can't look that up in the microsoft database because their server that that certain error is under is unavailable. Anyone know what's going on? And no I don't have another PSU to test.

To find "restart on error option"
Go to Start....Settings....Control Panel....System....Advanced....Startup and Recovery.

then the cd rom is probably faulty if it kills the computer. do you have another cdrom to try to check that.

What does it say on the blue screen? Post that back here.

Any problem indicators in the Device Manager? You might try Uninstalling the CD/DVD drives in the Device Manager and rebooting to let XP find them again and reinstall the drivers (they're build in to XP). If that doesn't work, disconnect one of the drives, make sure the one connected is jumpered to Master or Cable Select (80 wire cable required)and try again. Try each drive one at a time. One failing drive can disrupt the entire IDE channel. Testing them individulally will tell you which one is defective.

Have you tried swapping in another CD-ROM drive yet?

Try your CD-ROM drive in another computer and see if the same thing happens. If it does, the CD-ROM drive is defective and needs to be replaced.
