Hibernation loop in 2k

Running 2k w/ sp3 (or 4) a friends Sony tower is caught in some kind of loop.
It boots up, then goes right back into hibernation. He tried going into safe mode and choosing the two choices, but there is no difference, it still goes right back into hibernation.

I'm not sure what he did other than playing with the UPS tab under Power Options (he has no UPS). He also has that 'unplug or eject hardware' icon in the systen tray that he was changing the com port (not sure what he has hooked up other than a USB mouse).

Sorry for the short description, but that is all I have now untill I can get over there.

Any ideas?

videobruce - I think you've already figured the main culprit right there. See if you can get around it by keeping it on the AC adapter long enough to change the Power Options.

. . . Gary

[P.S. Oops. My apologies: I read too fast: I assumed it was a laptop! And you plainly said it was a tower. --> In that case, can I guess that the power options were in 2k and not in the Bios? I haven't seen this before, but I suppose you could try disabling the OS power management in the Bios (set it to have the Bios control power management), and see if it allows you enough time to enter Safe Mode & change the Windows 2k power settings. And I'll try to get a little better at speed-reading!]

Problem solved (sort of). He tried to use the orginal Phoney all baloney restore disk that came with the box, but stopped short. It wasn't short enough, now he gets a 'invalid disk' message. I told him to reload his bootable 2k disk I made him.
