Facts: Sony VAIO laptop, Windows XP
Problem: Windows XP will not run and the following message appears when boot in safe mode: SQL Server could not find the specified name instance (EMMDSE)-Please specify the name of an existing instance on the invocation of SQLSERVR.EXE. If you believe that your installation is corrupt or has been tampered with, uninstall then re-run setup to correct this problem. What do I need to do to avoid losing the information already on the laptop? |

Does the lappy have a version of SQL or MSDE installed on it?
The error: "If you believe that your installation is corrupt or has been tampered with, uninstall then re-run setup to correct this problem" generally happens if the computer name has been changed. Changing it back to the orignal name will solve the problem provided you get the pc to boot up.

SQL Server issue
I do not have extensive knowledge of computers but by "boot up" do you mean getting XP to get to the desktop? I cannot get to the desktop. It only gets to the Windows XP screen and goes no further. I only got the error message when I re-started in the safe mode but still it went no further than the Windows XP screen.
???What is SQL server? ???What do you mean by "changing the computer name back to the original name? How would the computer name have been changed--I didn't do it knowingly? I do not know what the computer name is or what significance it has. Please elaborate to help me figure out the main point. Thx |
