winXP CD

Is it possible to make a winXP disk from the disks that came with the computer. I do not want to use the disk that came with the computer so am wondering if there is any way I can just use the win XP and leave all the other things off. Or do I have to buy another xp. am going to be using a different motherboard and computer not using the old one anymore but wanted to use the same number. Thouht tyou were able to transfer from one computer to another long as you only used it once.
The old computer is a laptop and is a toshiba am getting rid of it and want to use on desktop.

no.
you cannot do that and if it were possible it would be ileagle to do so.
you must use the restore cd that came with it as it will be some what tied to it as far as the liceness goes.
you do need to buy another copy of xp to use on another computer.

the old one must stay with the old computer.

Not the same answer one of you say yes the other says no. How about this than could you use any restore windows XP disk to get a file off it . I still don`t understand when you buy a computer with winxp already installed that you don`t get a disk with it.
This is what happened got one computer with XP installed already and have another laptop with XP recovery disks with it some things I need to work with are not on my computer and need a disk to get it off it is a big bother to take it to the techs where I bought them so was looking for disk to get this off the windows XP both computers have legal number.
Does XP professional have the same files on it ?

If all you need to transfer is files that you created, you can use the "Files and Settings Transfer Wizard" located at start-all programs-accessories-system tools.

What type of files are you trying to get off the disks?

Name brand OEM loads of XP are licensed only to the computer it shipped with, regardless of whether they are hotloads with a restore partition or actual CD's. Trying to use a Toshiba restore disk on a different computer/motherboard will not work because of the different hardware and is not legal. Even if you could get it to install, Microsoft will not allow an activation, they will direct you to Toshiba for activation, and they will not give it to you because it's no longer a Toshiba computer. Whether you think this is "fair" or not, that's the way it is, this kind of reuse is specifically prohibited in the EULA. Seems to me I read a thread about someone who blew an EMachines motherboard - and replaced it with a generic board to save considerable money - and EMachines will not give them an activation because it's no longer an EMachines motherboard - it's buy their replacement at inflated price or tough luck.

Bottom line, you must buy a new copy of XP for your desktop computer.

I had understood all thatabout the restore disk had given up that one the only thing I wanted to know about the restore disk if you could just get the XP windows off it but apparently not for any restore disk. so that is fine after that was wondering why when you buy your computer with win xp on it that a disk didn`t come with it. if it doesn`t how are you supposed to repair or anything else to your computer that was my last question. I just said it should be a law that it has to have a disk come with it. Guess that message that I thought I posted never got submitted. I don`t have win xp myself and I don`t plan on having it like win 2000 until something better comes along. This was just for a friend will let her worry about it. Thanks for all the help.

They don't expect you to. They expect you to nuke and pave using the image on the restore partition, saves them the cost of making CD's and the phone support time (and having to hire support agents that are competent, unfortunately - any moron can talk you through hitting a few keys and restoring an image). When Dell stopped providing CD's, they went to the restore partition, but provided a utility for the customer to burn their own restore CD. They no longer even do that, they offer a CD when you order the PC for an extra $10, and I'd guess more than $10 if you order it after the fact.

Microsoft has been leaning on their OEM's to stop providing media too - they feel it will reduce piracy. I think they offer very attractive licensing prices as an incentive.

How would install Korean simplified language if you don't have a disc? I installed a game last month, Gunbound, and after the install I was told to insert my XP disc to get the codes for Korean something or other.

Would those codes allready be in the install if you used the restore partion?

I have a restore partion for on a shelf in my desk, came with a 40 GB 5400 RPM Seagate that I pulled out and replaced the first week, I think I'll turn it into an external drive.
