XP Operating System
I have an E-Machine 1800series. I have tryed to clear it out without the restore disk, which i do not have. Now windows will not load at start up. Can i just buy a new XP disk and it fix it back properly? It was hooked up to a network via IBM server and it has ghost files and lots of other stuff i am not concerned about in it that i could not get out. Also from what i could tell there was never a recovery disk or file made when it was new. Thanks JD.

As far as I know the BIOS on an Emachine is not tied into the XP disk specific to that machine like Dell's are, so if you don't mind spending a little money on a new copy of XP then you should have no problems.

Yes, you should be able to use a regular XP disk. An oem disk is all you need and I'd recommend one with SP2 preinstalled. You may need to download some of your drivers from eMachines after the fresh install. Here's my store of choice in the US for buying MS os's.

The Retail version gets you a fancy box and phone support form MS. The oem is the same disk but no support. You get to come here to get your questions answered instead (which you'd probably do with the retail version too!!)

OEM WinXP is also tied to that specific box, i.e. you can't later on use it on another box. With a regular one you can call up MS and tell them you are trashing your old box and want to install on a new box and they will give you a new activation code. There may also be some restrictions on upgrading from an OEM winxp to windows vista. There are none with a retail version. So you would have to buy the full version of vista instead of the cheaper upgrade version.

Not sure I agree, kilgoretrout. I've transferred an oem disk from one computer to another. Called MS for a new activation and it went without a hitch. Sold a machine that had been activated with XP Home OEM and had a buyer that wanted Pro installed. Wiped the hdd and did a fresh install of the Pro and used the Home disk on another machine.

Point taken. Not sure why MS allowed me to remove it from one and install it on another pc but they did.

Panama is right. I've done this also.
I don't know why MS allows it sometimes and sometimes they don't, but I have a Dell OEM disk that has worked on multiple computers (unloading from one and installing on the next, of course ;-). -Kev
