Increase the color to one of the high color or true color settings - 16, 24, or 32 bit. 256 colors are only 8 bit. If you can't get this setting to stick, your video driver is not properly installed.

If this is the same system with the onboard Trident3D built into the Via KLE133, you should be fine to display the color depths that glc mentions. Even 2mb video cards could do "true color" at 640x480 - and the Trident has 8mb.

If you're certain your driver CD is the right one, try removing the current driver (if it's anything other than "Standard VGA" - which you can leave alone), and trying installing from your motherboard driver CD again.

Best of luck

Curious if this is a shared memory board with less than full memory assigned to the video. SWAG since I don't know the board.

Hi again

The FTP page of video drivers linked to from the FIC website for your motherboard = curiously does not contain any drivers that will work with your motherboard. Those drivers are all for Via chipsets more recent than the one on your board. No one ever accused FIC of having a support site that makes sense.

You'll need to have ALL the Via chipset drivers for your motherboard installed for the chipset video driver to work. All the drivers you need for Win98se should theoretically be on the driver CD.

If you feel you have all the Via KLE133 chipset drivers in EXCEPT for the video, you can get the video drivers from viaarena - follow this link, and note the instructions they give on that page http://www.viaarena.com/default.aspx...0&SubCatID=108

Best of luck
. . . Gary

[P.S. -- I wouldn't consider running XP with less than 256mb of system memory, if you are still considering upgrading. If you go to XP, besides adding more memory, you'll want to consider adding a more capable PCI video card (you can't go AGP, since the board doesn't have an AGP slot). You'd need the older PCI type of video card, not the newer "PCI-Express". -- Win98se should be a good match for the system specs of your current hardware]

The KLE133 with 98 is fussy. When you find the right driver, you will have full control over the display.

Gary's link should be what you need, but you need the chipset drivers FIRST.
