Salvaging the XP OS from an old computer
See
http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=141835 However, after reading about XT 983's performance http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/f...hreadId=709861 I have a question. If I build a new computer is it possible to salvage the Windows XP OS from the XT 983 & be legal with Microsoft? Thanks. Thanks |

I could not find a reference to the OS so....
If you bought the computer from HP and it came with the OS that you are talking about transferring to a new PC then your answer is no - you can not as the license is tied to the HP PC- this is why it did not cost you another 100+ dollars for the PC. (this is the difference between an OEM copy of the OS and a retail one -see the links below) If on the other hand you bought the OS yourself from some store and have the installation disk, then as long as you remove it from the old PC then your answer is yes you can. Even if the copy you bought was an OEM copy like this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16837102151 vs this one which is retail http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16837116193 - though technically it is still against the EULA and illegal. You do still need to remove from the old PC

sdkfz, do appreciate the quick response, unfortunately, it was a Wal-Mart computer purchase.
Have a good one.
