My computer is locking up every 5 minutes!!

I just had a new hard drive installed and my computer is locking up every 5 minutes. There are no error prompts, it just freezes. I have to re-start it and keeps happening. Any clue what's causing it?

Could you post some more details...? Mobo, what kind of HD, how big, did it start happening IMMEDIATLY after you installed it, or did it start like 2 or 3 days later?

I have an Asus P4P800S Mobo. I got a Seagate Baracuda 160 gig SATA 150 HD unstalled. I didn't install it myself and I noticed this evening after I got the computer back. It was only happening when I was in Firefix, so I re-installed it and it hasn't happened for a while. Hopefully it's fixed

Yeah, Drivers can be a massivew pain...I would also keep an ear on your HD though, if you hear any loud clicking and like a coarse like sound, it might mean that your HD is faulty...I highly doubt it, because seagate a fairly reputable company...So, just a little tip

Actually, the HD is making more noise than I think it should. I was under the impression that these drives were very quiet. It is still locking up on me and I just uninstalled firefox. I'm going to see if it happens in IE. Any tips or suggestions?

Try the Seagate trouble shooting page here ( http://www.seagate.com/support/ts/sata/index.html ) and maybe download "lifegaurd" Seagates diagnostic tool.

How do I make a bootable disk from the iso file? I have it downloaded, but I don't know what to do next.

The ISO is for making a bootable CD. Open the .iso in your CD burning software (as an image) and burn it. If you want floppies, download the floppy version.

I got it onto a disc, but I can't run it. It is supposed to run in DOS.

Did you burn it as an ISO?
Try downloading and running from floppies (it's only two disks) it's a lot easier.

CD-ROM ISO Image Usage Instructions

Bootable ISO CD - Windows XP CD burning software

Unfortunately, as stated in Microsoft Knowledge Base Article Q279157: "The CD-RW recording feature that is built in to the Windows XP shell does not support the creation of an International Standards Organization (ISO) image. To create an ISO image in Windows XP, you need to install a third party utility that supports this feature."

Bootable ISO CD - creating with Roxio Easy CD creator
Download the SeaTools Desktop .ISO file to your hard drive.
Locate the downloaded file. Select the file, and then open the file by double-clicking it. Roxio Easy CD Creator will then launch.
Insert a blank CD-R in the drive.
At the record CD Setup screen select “Start Recording”. Follow the on screen prompts to complete the SeaTools Desktop boot CD creation.
You may also create the boot CD by using the “Open this file from its current location” option instead of downloading the file to your hard drive.

Bootable ISO CD - creating with Ahead Software Nero version 5.5.24 or higher
Download the SeaTools Desktop .ISO file to your hard drive.
Open your Nero Burning ROM software.
If the Nero Wizard opens by default then close it (click the close wizard button). Otherwise skip this step.
Click Cancel when the New Compilation window opens. Once this cancels you should be at the main Nero Burning Window.
From the pull down menu at the top of the Window, choose File > then select Burn Image. This will open a file-browsing box.
Choose the SeaTools Desktop .ISO file (after navigating to the location you downloaded it to) then click the Open button.
Now the Write CD window will open. Click the Write button.
Once the CD has completed writing you can discard the log file, close Nero, and reboot from the CD. Be sure you BIOS is set to boot from CD, otherwise you will just boot as normal.

More detailed steps with screen shots can be found on Ahead software's web site.

You may be able to create the bootable CD using software other than Roxio Easy CD Creator or Ahead Software’s Nero. Check with your software manufacturer for more information on creating a CD from an ISO image file. This is an .ISO image file. Do not burn the file to the CD as a simple data file. It must be treated as an .ISO image or it will not run the program properly.

---------------------------------------------------

Then you BOOT THE COMPUTER with the CD.

Thanks for taking the time to write that. I got it burned using Nero and got it booted and tried to run the test, but it keeps locking up.

Could the drive be bad?

Download - Pre-Compiled package for Floppy (DOS - Win)

It's a zip file. There's a readme in the zip that tells you how to make the floppy. Boot with it.

If you'd rather use a cd:

Download - Pre-Compiled Bootable ISO (.zip)

-------------------------------

When people post links, you need to read the page.

It's not the ram. I'm RMA'ing it today.
