XP Pro is the only way I can run Dual Core CPU, right?
I've read that XP Home doesn't support dual processors. I'm assuming that a dual core such as the Pentium D 820 would be seen as 2 processors. Just want to make sure I have to get XP Pro for my new build..
Thanks

I have a 3.2 HT pentium in my Toshiba laptop running XP home and runs like a dream, that D820 will work fine, Windows will list it as two processors in Device Manager.

The dual cores will work with Xp home. It only counts the processors installed, not the number of cores.

Okay, cool. I'm building a computer to run a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) for audio recording. I'm used to using XP Pro, is there any reason I SHOULDN'T use XP Home for the DAW? I have to buy so much stuff, saving money where I can is important..
Thanks |

Are you buiding a second machine? You mentioned that you already have XP Pro...
Windows XP Home Note: Windows XP Home can use a maximum of one (1) physical processor. However, because Hyper-Threading is supported, the operating system takes advantage of the second (virtual) processor. http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;810231

I have just read about 8 reviews for that proccessor and everyone of them carried out the tests using XP pro but none of them catagorically stated that you cannot use XP home, as jayb says.

Okay, thanks guys.
Now I've got a dumb question.. I was planning on getting OEM, I have been reading that OEM Windows is bound to hardware... If I replace hardware such as the mobo, will this cause problems? |

You may have to re register XP, replacing a part like a motherboard is OK to do.

It may require reactivation (not registration, that's still optional), which is no big deal.
