XPHome setup re-starts at a certain point in the installation.
The hard drive on my niece's IBM Think Centre A50p 8195 A7U died so I bought an identical hd, a 40 gig Western Digital WD400. She can't find the XPHome cd that came with the system, so I also bought a full version of Home XP to install on the new hd. Booting from the cd drive, setup formats the new drive, copy files to the installation folder, initialize the configuration, load some drivers, no problem, but then at this point it goes back to the start of setup again. I removed the PCI Modem which is the only card in the system but it made no difference. I am completely stumped. Help!!

It sounds like this is your problem : http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;891892
especially since it's starts when XP is loading drivers. The disks that come with OEMs are usually proprietary in some way so you may need to get another XP disk from IBM (I think it's Lenovo now) to match the model of your niece's computer.

Thanks for the input Pam123. I'll follow that link that you gave me and see what info is in there. The problem however resolved itself. I cold booted last night like I did many times yesterday, and voila the installation continued. Go figure! My problem now though is that the IBM logo and the power on test does not show on the screen when booting. Just black screen until the Windows logo appears. I checked the bios and everything is enabled. It is a little bit unnerving staring at a black screen wondering whther the computer is doing anything at all. I certainly appreciate and could use more help. Thanks again.

Hmmnn...
That would make me uneasy and I'd check to be sure all connections were tight, on the other hand, if the thing works.... Drop by the former IBM site and see what updates and drivers they have for that model. |

I`m not familiar with IBM`s bios screen but it sounds as if you may have a fast boot option enabled which would most likely bypass memory, drives checks and such to boot faster. The lack of an IBM logo may also be bios based and disabled.
Might be worth a look. |

You are right on Digitalic. One of the things that I did is to change the self test setting from, "quick" to "extended". I also had to disable the "network" start-up option from the start-up sequence in BIOS. Found these remedies from the IBM website that Pam123 recommended. Thanks to you all, I will have one very happy niece in the morning. Hope to be abe to do the same like you and the others in the forum do, ........"spread the joy around!"
