Are there diffferent versions of xp home UPGRADE?
Ok well I have xp home upgrade that i bought like 4yrs ago for my old HP with windows ME.
I was planning on using it to upgrade my current pc running win2k pro BUT it CLEARLY states on the package that it will only work with windows 98 and windows ME? That doesnt make sense to me. Is there a win2k specific xp upgrade? |

Accoring to the link, XP Home can only upgrade 98 & ME.
XP Pro can upgrade all... http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/h...ng/matrix.mspx

False , I purchased a Home upgrade XP version on day one. In fact this upgrade IS a full version but you must prove that you already own already any OS license .. 98 , ME .. ECT... If you don't use it like you sould be : over a existing version 98,Me... you can install it on a blank formatted HD. The trick : During the installation the OS ask for a Microsoft OS license .... guess what .. i have inserted my original Windows 95 in the cd-drive ... 10 Seconds later the CD was ejected and the program asked to have the WinXp home upgrade version back in the drive and installed the OS. No files from the Win95 CD vas copied .. just a verification check i guess.. but the fact is that i ended with a full installation from a upgrade XP CD. You can do that with any legit windows CD's ..95,98,ME. The must fun out of this is that a upgrade version is way less expensive that a full version. So Upgrade version = Full version if you already have and legit license (OS CD). did you know that ?? haha ... smart trick huh ?? I also own a original Win98 Upgrade CD... i will try it next time ... install XP upgrade with a 98 Upgrade .. haha funny ...

Burn-- I learned that a day or so after I bought the full version 3 years or so ago. Luckily, I was able to convince the guy who bought my old computer that he needed a copy, and gave him $20.00 off. MS seems to downplay that, but- I'm only out $20, and I've now got an Upgrade CD to use with my old Win 98 license.

Burn, you can usually buy a full unrestricted OEM for less than an upgrade.
2000 Pro is not a qualifying upgrade for XP Home, it doesn't work. Last edited by glc; 10-24-2005 at 08:47 PM. |

OEM is more expensive because you suposed to buy hardware with it , right ??? (joke)hehe ! didn't know about win 2000 pro ... anyway , if you think of it , it is logical.. XP home is a downgrade for Win200 Pro .. it is stripped from some network features like the admin tools. Last edited by Burn; 10-24-2005 at 09:22 PM. |

Not all vendors adhere to the hardware requirement, and many others only want you to buy a 99 cent cable to qualify.

But - Full install isn't the same as an upgrade is it?

I believe an Upgrade disk, an OEM disk and a full Retail disk all contain the same Operating System. The Upgrade disk has an additional requirement to check for a previously installled, qualified version of Windows. However, if you use an Upgrade disk to install on a new or clean hard drive, you can "pass" the previous os requirement by inserting a qualifying os disk in the CD drive at the appropriate time. You'll then be asked to reinsert your XP Upgrade disk to continue. Swap the disks and you're good to go. |

Thanks. Course I knew that. I was wondering if Burn knew that a full install generaly requires the drive to be formated versus "upgrading" an existing OS from one to the other.
