Problem with explorer.exe with WinXP Pro

Ok.... I seem to be having an issue with explorer.exe...... when i turn on my comp, everything seems to be going alright, but a few seconds after the welcome window pops up and my desktop starts to load, my comp seems to just stop loading... i have control over the mouse and the only way i can even use my comp right now is to bring up the task manager, click on explorer.exe and end process..... any help with this would be appriciated

Start it in safe mode and do full virus and spyware scans.

TO START YOUR COMPUTER IN SAFE MODE
Restart the computer.
Some computers have a progress bar that refers to the word BIOS. Others may not let you know what is happening.
As soon as the BIOS loads, begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard. Do so until the Windows Advanced Options menu appears.
If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. If this happens, restart the computer and try again.
Using the arrow keys on the keyboard, select Safe mode and then press Enter.
