Servicepack files

When I start my computer Task Manager shows 5 svchost.exe's running. What is this? Are they all necessary? One is using ~ 22 MB memory and the others are using < 5 MB memory.

They aren't service pack files; it's the service host process (read more here ) and it's perfectly normal to have multiple instances of it running. If your machine is sluggish consider seeing what other processes, services and programs may be running in the background and disabling that. You dont have too much control over svchost's instances other than to disable other programs that may/not remove calls to svchost.
