Windows won't recognize hard drive

I'm trying to make a backup of my current old drive using another blank IDE hard drive.
The thing is, BIOS recognizes the hard drive, but Windows XP doesn't. I've tried to the get windows to recognize through the drive though the "add new hardware wizard" but its just not picking it up at all.

Any suggestions?

Do you see the drive in Device Manager (in Control Panel)?

If so, you probably just need to assign a drive letter. To do this, go to Computer Management (right click on My Computer) > Drives and Storage > Disk Management. You will see your drive is unassigned. Right click on it and select a drive letter. You will then see it in My Computer.

When you mean it doesn't recognize it, do you mean it's not showing up in Device manager, or it's not showing up as a drive in Explorer? Because it's not going to show up as a drive until it is partitioned and formatted.

Right-click on "My Computer", select Manage, then click on Disk Management. If it doesn't show up there, then you have a problem.

I made a mistake in what I said before, its not being picked up by BIOS, I wanted it as a slave drive, so I took out the jumper, and connected it up. I can hear the drive running, but its not being picked up.

Usually if you have no jumpers on the drive, it assumes it's a single drive. There should be configuration shown on the drive for the jumper setting for slave.

Also, check your ribbon cable that's connecting the drives. If it is 80 wire (connectors different colours - black, grey, blue) then both drives should be set to "Cable Select". Just make sure if it's cable select that the drive you want to be master is at the end of the ribbon (I believe black) and the slave is in the middle (grey).

Oh God, I threw the jumper to my original hard drive away, thinking I didn't need it.

Go down to your local computer store, they may have a bunch of extra jumper available.
