Windows 2000 starting slow

Hello

I am having an issue with windows 2000 taking a considerble amount of time to get past the splash screen (about 5 minutes). It doesnt' seem to be a spyware problem because the desktop loads fine, and there are no performance issues when you start using programs. The OS is running on a P3 Dell latitude laptop.

Has it always been slow?
Is the pc on a network?
Have you recently added any USB devices to it?

Has it always been like this? Do you have a DSL router?
