Control Panel question for everyone. I recently downloaded a codec pack from free-codecs.com to add support for AVI and a couple other file formats for Windows Media Player not knowing that I could download a codec pack directly from Microsoft for this. Anyway, this codec pack installed some stupid AC3Filter program to "enhance" my sound performance. I can't stand it when unwanted programs are on my computer and when I uninstalled the codec pack, this little program stayed and is still accessable through the control panel. I searched on the forums here and found that I can remove the shortcut for it, but I was wondering if I could delete the program also, painlessly. I searched for AC3filter on the computer and found the control panel icon for it (ac3filter.cpl) and another file with it (ac3filter.ax), both in the Windows/System32 folder. Is that the program with it there or is it somewhere else? They are the same file size at 408kb. I'd rather consult you XP masters before I start deleting stuff.

I think I solved my problem. I found on some website about uninstalling this codec manually.
-Find ac3filter.ax file. -Unregister this module from command line: >regsvr32 /u C:\WINDOWS\system32\ac3filter.ax -Find and delete files ac3filter.ax and ac3filter.cpl -Delete registry key HKCU\Software\AC3Filter I couldn't find that registry key but had Registry Mechanic find it elsewhere and it took care of it. I have no idea what that command line did, but the end result was "DLLUnregisterServer in C:\WINDOWS\system32\ac3filter.ax succeeded." I'm hoping it's gone for good. |
