Do the security updates first. Then you will get the chance to download and install SP2. Those updates seem to be a prerequisite when you are doing it through Windows Update.

Give M$ a ring and ask for a CD. They'll send you a free SP2 install CD, No Q's asked.

Yeah, it has to extract the files first, then it'll install it.

To check whether you have SP2 installed, rightclick on "My Computer", select properties, it'll tell you there.

Or, when you start Windows, it'll say "Windows XP" on the black screen with the loading bar. Where won't be "Home Edition" or "Professional" as with SP1 or XP original.

Honestly, I would not use the standalone file. I have had problems trying to update to SP2 by using that file.

What has always worked for me is to keep on going to the Windows Update site (windowsupdate.microsoft.com), and running the Windows Update over and over until there is nothing more to install. If you don't have SP2 yet, doing this will guarantee that you will get it eventually. Doing it this way has never failed me, while trying to use the standalone file hasn't worked on occassion.
