Old HDD New Motherboard/processor
I am upgrading my computer after a recent mobo failure. I have purchased a new case, pwr supply, mobo, processor and video card. I would like to keep the old HDD which contains Windows XP Pro and all my personal stuff. Questions: After configuring the BIOS am I going to have problems booting from the HDD? Will I have problems intalling the new drivers? Are there any licensing issues? Are there any other "Gotchas" to look out for? WYduane Windows XP Pro SP2, ECS N2U400 Motherboard, AMD Athelon XP 3000+ processor, EVGA GeForce MX4000 PCI Video Card |

You will need to do a repair reinstall of Windows. Boot with the CD and go into Setup (NOT repair). When it finds the existing Windows installation, THEN choose repair.

I know when i did that i had to re-activate windows, so i am pretty sure you will have to. If you have done a reinstall of windows in the last 6 months you might have to call microsoft to get the activation as it won't let you over the net. If it has been more than 6 mohts then you should be able to do it over the net. I'm not sure about hte drivers. I am pretty sure you will have to get new ones. I don't know if the old ones on the old HDD are going to affect that or not. Just a FYI the reason you want to do this is that windows puts your parts into its registry. Its to prevent hard drive swapping I believe. I know if you want to be able to hot swap a windows HDD you will have to have the same exact parts and computer to do it. The AF is having a really hard time with this. Any way have fun with the upgrade.

Thanks for the tips Jester. I am sure that I will have problems with this upgrade. I am upgrading a friends computer and about a year ago he had a computer service guy come in and upgrade the O/S from wndws98 to XP-OEM. The service guy did not provide an XP-CD. I have one but after reading what you have to say, I am concerned that I will have real probs. reactivating windows XP.

If the service guy installed XP oem there should be a sticker on the case with the product key for that installation. If so, you should be able to use your XP cd with the product key on the case. The oem version is for that machine only. The sticker reads " You are required to affix this Certificate of authenticity to the exterior of the PC"

Thanks trulad: That's good to know, I'll have to get after the guy. There is no sticker on the case and the owner doesn't have the product key.
