boot sector errors!

After running AVG 7 on the C:drive I got a note "reading errors in boot sector" the mbr partition and other folders are all OK and the pc still boots.

How do I identify and repair if possible the boot sector which has I beleive some duff data after an attempt to load XP onto a new HDD with problems!!
(see other post in windows vista /server2003/win XP --- problems making dual boot on new drive)
Can I investigate the boot sector in any way without loosing existing data on C:??
