as a after thought, maybe you should have done the repaire install that would replace any bad or missing files and not tuch anything else.
but you would need to do the reinstalls of any service packs and updates over.

Its an old computer that i rarely use, and i dont really have anything important on it. Will I just need to install all the programs such as word, antivirus, and firewall?

All programs need to be reinstalled.
You can back up files but not "installed" programs.
Also you can't open the files, word, etc., without the progrms beins installed.

I have a problem with this advice. Even a QUICK format wipes the drive.

When i said windows only i was talking about the whole windows with docs, and not checking if theres a problem with your harddrive or curing virus.

your right about that, but its easyer to recover your stuff. quick format clears the hardrive, long format clears the harddrive and check if theres a malfunction with the harddrive and completly clear everything
(for example: i did a quick format the otherday, the stuff was gone but for some reason the virus stayed, i dont know why it stayed but it was there, and i couldnt remove it so i re-installed windows with long format and it was gone)
