Explorer shutting down

This XP laptop blue screened, so to fix it I put in my XP disk and allowed it to run through a repair. It worked fine, even after I loaded SP2, but then I did the 31 new upgrades and after those installed explorer crashes after it boots and all you get is the desktop wallpaper. I repaired it again and used it for a week with only SP2 added and then I decided to do the remaining updates. Explorer crashes after boot again. I can only boot to safe mode with command prompt so I did a scan disk, no help. I really dont want to have to re-format, any ideas?

This machine is as clean as I can get it. No viruses. I have run scans with Ad-aware, Spybot, Ewido and Counter Spy for spyware and all report clean. It crashes on the reboot after the updates have installed, but it gets to the desktop screen, but just before icons are to appear error arrives.
