In XP you can do a repair install to fix problems within the os but a complete reinstall involves reformatting and losing all data. Check our Tips and Tricks forums for how to do an over-the-top reinstall of 98. Very similar to an XP repair install. Neither will cause loss of installed programs or files. However, both will require using Windows Update to reinstall all updates. You can also use the over-the-top tip to upgrade from 98 first edition to 98SE without losing programs or files.
