Removing Dual boot

Hi fellas!

I recently deleted the partition on which I had XP64, so I was reduced to just the one OS (XP).

However, I can't figure out how to correctly edit the boot record to 'forget' XP64. I notice I can edit the boot.ini file manually - here is the extent of mine:

[boot loader]
timeout=0
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Windows XP Professional x64 Edition" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

I physically deleted the x64 line, although on re-boot it returned.

Anything I'm missing here?

Cheers

Freakitchen

I'm a little surprised your manual edit didn't work. You could try it again from Safe Mode, logged on as Administrator. I'd imagine your NTLDR, NTDETECT, and BOOT.INI files are on the same partition as your original XP installation - it they aren't, you can put them there manually. Another option is to use the Recovery Console & try the "fixboot" routine. [I haven't the details on that handy, but a quick Google might grab that info for you].

I'll paste a link to an old article (2002) from Anandtech on removing an OS from a dual boot, in case it helps uncover a detail I've overlooked http://www.anandtech.com/guides/viewfaq.aspx?i=109

Best of luck
