wierd problem

I've been working on this computer that has me baffled.

Its a celeron 600. 128 megs of ram, onboard sound & video. Running win me.

The computer was basically running fine. Windows was getting screwy, giving out strange error messages, wouldn't run the win updates.
So I decided to reformat it & reinstall windows.

Now i've run into another totally new problem.

The computer will run fine, right up until windows fully loads, then it just shuts down.
I can boot to dos, fdisk, format, install windows, it'll detect new hardware, install all the drivers, reboot & then once it reboots it'll get to the point where its just finally ready to run & it shuts down.
It seems to happen just as the pointer is turning from an hourglass into a regular mouse pointer.
The screen goes blank, the power button stops having any effect. I have to turn the power supply off & on to get it to restart.
It doesn't make any difference in normal or safe mode. No matter what I try it won't fully load.
It never does it at all when i'm running in dos, I can do anything & it runs fine.

I've tried 2 differents HDs.
I've swapped out the ram.
I've replaced all the data cables.
I pulled the PCI cards out.
I tried a PCI video card.

Any ideas?

OK I tried setting up win 98 instead of win me & it worked like a charm.

So its a problem with win me & isn't a problem with win 98 somehow.

Exclamation That option was the better one

Compared to Win98 (se, at least), WinMe had way too many never-corrected problems.
