Known issue with faster than 2.1 GHz processors.

Is this the case? The workaround is remove your modem and disable or remove your Ethernet adapter, install Windows custom, unchecking Communications. When Windows is installed, then you can add the hardware and Windows components back in.

sorry for the not so clear info.. I was posting this for friend.
he is running 98 with about 1.6 board.. He wiped his hard drive
and installed 98 again.. well something went dif. from the times before.
nsid.vsc error 8 on start up.. he is on dial up.
which adapters should be for dial up ? also if you wipe your hd clean and reinstall 98 shldn you start at ground level again? In all the reading i noticed some ram memory mentioned as a possible.. I guess when its working and then you do something and it has a problem you just assume its your fault..

Ram is always a possible issue and it can be tested.

Well he bought new memory and it is showing correct. but the vxd errors still come.. he has wiped clean and formated since the new memory.. it just seems if you hd is clean and you install 98 it shouldnt have any file error in
the reg to conflict should it.. Is there anything that could be left on hd after
fdisking and formating. nidswan.vxd. nids.vxd or the errors.. He even used
a dif. 98se disk this time..

Try disabling every PCI device on the motherboard (i.e. built-in sound, LAN, USB, etc.). Like glc said, you can systematically add them back until you find the culprit.
