Internet Explorer keeps crashing - Windows 98 SE
Background - I have 2 operating systems on my computer, Windows 98 SE (on one hard drive) and Xp (on a larger newer hard drive). With the 98 drive being the master and the XP the slave. XP is running fine so unless it is something on the older hard drive it is not a hardware problem. My Windows 98 was having some problems and getting slower and slower so prior to the problem with internet explorer crashing very frequently I did the following:
- use Registry Mechanic to try cleanup registry problems, (free portion only) and ran the optimization. Did not notice any problems with internet explorer after this. System was somewhat faster but not like it used to be. Then did the following but not sure which order: - ran ad aware to remove spyware - ran Windows Update and installed one or two of the critical updates (had not run this for years on Windows 98). Not sure if I went into internet explorer after this - ran defrag Next time I went into I had problems with Internet Explorer crashing after about a minute (didn't seem to matter which type of page I went to) saying that it had performed an illegal operation and had to close. I virus checked both drives using both systems (TELUS Antivirus on XP and McAfee on Wondows 98) with up to date virus definitions and scan engines and found no viruses. I used XP to download Internet Explorer 6 SP1 and reinstalled it on Windows 98. The crashes were not as frequent then but were still occuring. Completed the updates from Microsoft hoping the problem would get fixed but it didn't. Any suggestions on how to fix and/or determine what is causing the problem? System: IBM Aptiva AMD K6(tm) 3D processor 400 Mhz 386 MB RAM Thanks |

Uninstall IE6, it will revert back to IE5. IE6 and Windows 98 do not always get along well with each other. See if that helps.
