Then format the partition and do a clean install of XP.

But AFAIK the admin password is a must. . .I might be wrong, though.

For a repair you don't need a password. You just boot from the CD and go through it as if you wanted to install XP. Setup will find your current XP and ask you to repair it. Just confirm that and it'll be repaired. You don't need the console for that.

XP doesn't ask you for a password during repair. It might ask you to create one, though. When you enter something there, what happens ?

"back" to the prompt ? Means you were at the prompt before ?

You don't have to be at the prompt. Boot from CD to install Windows. When XP detects your Windows version and asks you if you wanna repair, acknowledge it.

That's odd. It seems you'll have to format and do a clean install.
I have never been asked for a password for an XP repair.

Let's be even MORE specific. When you boot with the CD, you will come up to a screen that gives you choices to repair or to do a setup. If you choose repair, this is where the console comes up and it asks you to log in. If you did not set a password, you hit Enter and you should be at a C:\Windows prompt. This is the repair console. Now what do you do? If you know the specific commands you need to issue to do specifically what you want, go for it. The console is basically a DOS substitute.

To do a repair *reinstall* of Windows, at the first screen choose Setup *instead* of repair. It will then work for a bit and it will find an existing install of Windows. NOW among the choices you choose Repair. There should not be anything asking you for a password here.

What do you want to do? WHY are you using the repair console?

Looks like he is confused, read carefuly what Windows Setup is asking you and at first choosing DO NOT use REPAIR because that brings you at command prompt and password asking situation!!!
