What exactly are you trying to accomplish? When installing Windows, this step isn't necessary, so if you are doing something other than installing Windows, let us know so we have more information.

Hi baseball258
You may want to check in on your Boot Sequence in the System Setup. For your Latitude model enter Setup by pressing the FnF1 key combination (or Scroll Lock F1 on an external keyboard if the External Hot Key option is enabled). The hard drive (obviously) should already be bootable - so set the Boot sequence to CD-ROM/HDD & take the Win98 CD out of the CD-drive. If the system won't boot with that option selected, view your Dell User Guide's instructions on running the Dell Diagnostics for your model - to rule out any hardware trouble. Here's the link to your guide online at dell.com http://support.dell.com/support/edoc..._ref/index.htm If you have the floppy already created, all you'll have to do is follow the instructions to start the diagnostics. If you haven't created a diagnostics floppy yet, the guide has those instructions also. If this Latitude had a dual-boot setup on it previously, let us know what other operating system was installed. In such cases, you usually need to restore a Win9x bootloader to the boot sector of the hard drive [the fdisk/mbr command can accomplish this in some cases - but it must only be used under certain circumstances, since all data can be lost in some cases]. This should get you started. . . . Gary [like dr.gonzo - I'm curious about the circumstances & reasons for the current system work] |

By the way if you want to make a win98 disk bootable you need to boot the operating system and then at a dos prompt type "sys d:" w/o the quotes and where "d" is the target drive.
