Always shows extensions!

For some reason, all my files show their extensions.

I did go to Control Panel > Folder Options > Checked "Hide file extensions for known file types" (or whatever it is) and it'll hide the extensions temporarily, then I restart my PC and the extensions are showing again.

What is causing this and how can I fix it?

Why do you WANT to hide extensions? That's not safe. Virus writers prey on this.

By default in windows, you can't see the extensions for known file types anyway. Even for my icons, I see the .ico

OK, open explorer\tools\view\folder options. Clear "hide file extensions for known file types" like you`ve done before and then on the top where it says "Folder views" click the button that says "Like current Folder"

You`ll get a message that tells you it will set folders like that the next time Explorer opens or something to that effect.

HOWEVER, what glc is telling you is correct. Virus files will sneak on your PC by having an innocent looking .ext when this setting is in the default mode.

A general rule is when there is a double "." it could be trouble. Maliciousfile.exe can be masqueraded as Maliciousfile.txt if file extensions are hidden. Malicious file.txt.exe won`t show the .exe part and appear as a simple text file. (Actually .txt files aren`t as innocent as they appear as they are the only NTFS files to recognize DATA streams)

ALWAYS be suspicious of any file with a *.*.*
