Exclamation 16 bit Windows Subsystem

Here is the scoop on what is going on with a friends comp. Running Windows XP SP2, trying to unistall a program but get an error message with the title being, " 16 bit Windows Subsystem." Here is the message below... "
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application." I have the options of 'Close' and 'Ignore' What can I do to relieve this issue and allow for the program to be uninstalled completely. Hitting close or ignore does nothing that I am aware of. If anyone has any suggestions, they would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Brandon
