There's a troubleshooter for this sort of error at ask-Leo, be sure to look at some of the feedback posts at the bottom of that article (a few match this sort of error fairly closely) http://ask-leo.com/iexploreexe_has_g..._now_what.html
If you've been running both FireFox & IE at the same time, try things with just one open at a time. Also, if you look in on your installed BHOs (Browser Helper Objects) - sometimes this sort of trouble traces to a badly behaving BHO. Sometimes it's spyware, but often a legit BHO that needs some fixing. You can use HiJackThis to check on your BHO's, which has the added advantage of showing the sensitive load areas of startup as well. XP's builtin method of checking the BHO's is to go to "Internet Options" in Control Panel [or to go to the "Tools" menu in your IE toolbar, and select "Internet Options" from there], then select "Programs", and "Manage Add-Ons" = this will provide a window with a list of your current BHOs. For a quick fix, do the usual run of malware scans, then try a repair reinstall of IE. Best of luck . . . Gary |
