switching from windows 2k to XP

I currently have a computer running on windows 2000. I want to switch to XP, but I don't want to lose all my stuff. Because installing a new OS clears all the files on the harddrive, I was wondering if there was some way to not lose all the data besides backing it all up into another harddrive or something.

creat what i believe is called an extended Partition where the OS will be at, you dont have to reformat everything if u dont want ya know. But first have u checked the requirements for xp? i believe u need to have is 256MB just so you know. But having multiple OS-es in a HDD hmm, im not sure how u set it up so that u get the OS screen where u pick in which one u boot tho, someone in here will help u on this

windows 2000 can be upgraded to windows xp from within the windows environment without the loss of any of your settings.

To use the upgrade version properly you still have to backup your data. Because if things go wrong you'll heve to format and reinstall from scratch. Contrary to the "just roll back to the old OS" school you can't always.
Sorry Randomize, but the only way to do the job right is to backup.
That way if you're unlucky it'll be an annoyance but not a total loss.
And while you're backing up remember to run the compatibility check so that you know what software will run as is or need an upgrade.

nd if a lot of stuff show up incompatible? I'm not gonna waste doing that anymore, after i install of a new OS i check the device manager see what's wrong after the upgrade, go to their manufactures website and download the driver...or if it works the "UPGRADE DRIVER" and click FROM WIndows updates (which really is helpful)

pam im not saying checking compatiblity is wrong, as of my last upgrade now it seems useless, i think it took me an 1hr to check for compatibility, wat a waste of time, did no help really.

What's your reason for upgrading from Win2000 to WinXP? Win2000 is basically WinXP without all the fluff. Do you need something that only WinXP has?

You can upgrade 2000 to XP *PRO* in place. You cannot do an in place upgrade with XP Home. Just put the CD in when in Windows, it will autorun and ask you what you want to do.

Some of the newer games are being made to be only xp compatible. I know the new bf2:special forces will not run AT ALL with anything but xp.
