Computer Repair Help Needed

My sons computer has goten extremely slow for some reason. It takes nearly 10 minutes to finish booting up and I can't figure out what the problems is.

Is there a diagnostic tool or utility that I can use to help me figure out the problem?

I really don't want to take it to the repair shop.

Thanks! Once it gets running it seems to be fine. He plays video games on it and DL's music etc without much problem. But booting up is a nightmare.

Thanks!

I finally got into the Windows Task Manager..

The CPU Usage is at 100% and total processes running is 46. From the little that i know, that can't be good.

Any thoughts.

Can you give us some system specifications, like make/model or if it was custom/home built and what operating system are you using?

don't be surprised if this gets moved by a mod to another board.

running processes: You can go through that list and disable some of the nonessential processes from running on startup. Likely candidates would be things like Instant Messenger programs, and update checkers for things like media player plugins. Don't disable anything that you aren't sure about because it could be a required windows component. That should help with the boot times.
malware: The problem could also be related to adware/trojans/viruses. You should run scans with Adaware, Spybot Search and Destroy, whatever antivirus program you use, and an online scan at this site.
